Timothy Jahns Early years
At a fairly young age I knew art was the most interesting thing I could do. Growing up in New Jersey gave me many chances to broaden my exposure to the arts. When I was very young I had some super supportive teachers. My middle school teacher Ms. Milo was a warm and friendly woman who allowed me in her class every day for three years. I would sit in the back and get lost in whatever I wanted. She was supportive and helpful and much of the joy I have in making art grew in that room. Making images is a way to get lost in your own world. You can control the outcome, direct the story, and tell the world whatever you want.
In 1993, I auditioned and was selected for Arts High School. This allowed me to complement my high school art class with more advanced painting courses.
In 1995, just as I was completing high school, I showed my work at the Emerging Artist Exhibition at the Nabisco Company headquarters, at that time located in East Hanover, New Jersey. That same year, I enrolled in an art school to receive additional training in drawing, painting and illustration. The duCret School of Art in Plainfield, New Jersey, founded in 1927, provided a curriculum based on learning the techniques of representational art. I had many great teachers: J. Brian Townsend and Paul McCormack, were a huge influence on me at this time. I really owe a lot of my early success to them.
In the late 1990’s I continued my schooling at the Art Students League in New York City. The historic Art Students League was founded in 1875 as an organization run by artists for artists. I studied with Ronald Sherr and Mary Beth McKenzie, both of whom are part of a long-standing figural painting tradition in American art. Eventually I earned the monitor assistant position for Mary Beth McKenzie’s class at the National Academy School of Fine Arts. It was during her mentorship that Mary Beth encouraged me to apply for a scholarship which funded my education in France at the SCAD-LaCoste School of Art residential program in LaCoste, Provençe; an experience that really opened my eyes and created the drive to continue to travel and paint.
Teaching & Traveling
Midway through my apprenticeship with Anthony Waichulis I was able to introduce my private student Tim Reynolds to Anthony. Tim Reynolds came up with the idea of opening art schools around the world teaching Anthony’s curriculum. This ultimately led to the development of an innovative concept of providing art education internationally.
Our goal is to provide step-by-step training for artists throughout the world with the hope of facilitating the growth of international creative connections. In 2010, the first of these schools opened when The Waichulis Studio became Ani Art Academies Waichulis. After graduating in 2011, I immediately became the first instructor at an international Ani Art Academies funded by the Tim Reynolds Foundation.
Since 2012 I have taught internationally, first in Anguilla and currently in Sri Lanka. Traveling has brought my wife and me much joy. The exposure of different cultures and customs has really impacted my work and teaching in such diverse countries has helped me broaden my perspective, both as an artist and as a person.
